Touring with her new album, Sydney-sider Jodi Martin is haled by The Australian as ‘one of Australia’s most talented female singer/songwriters’. Jodi is a multi-instrumentalist and singer with stories that will make you laugh and songs that can make you cry. She is joined by Liz Frenchman (Jigzag/Frencham Smith) on double bass. Liz has recently toured to WA with her new album ‘Jericho’ and will play a stunning set of her own. Dynamic dancing from the Spanish ensemble Encanto, haunting harmonies from Croatian Folkloric Group Zagreb and traditional French dances from Souleiado. Thursday 17 November 12.30 – 1.30pm JOSEPH TAWADROS Joseph Tawadros will perform his unique and extraordinary blend of traditional and original melodies played on the Egyptian oud. The virtuosity of this young artist has led him to perform with Slava Grigoryan, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney Opera House. Joseph, accompanied by his brother James on req (Egyptian percussion) will play in the improvised makam style – sometime beautiful, sometimes sad, sometimes exciting. In this interactive workshop Tim Chambers and Simon Rovis-Hermann will explore the history of the early instrument and the different styles and sounds of the guitar. Ages 8 – 12. Saturday 19 November 1.00 – 11.00 am JOSEPH TAWADROS WORKSHOP Joseph Tawadros is Australia’s leading oud player. The oud is the Middle Eastern ancestor of the lute, derived from the Arabic, Turkish and Armenian musical cultures. Using Arabic rhythms, the music of the oud is based on makam, a style of improved melodic composition. This workshop is a mesmerising insight into one of the great musical cultures of the world. THE VISIBLE PROJECT This award-winning artist is the foremost female exponent in Australia of the music traditions of Bengal. Drawing from the richly crafted traditional songs of life in Bangladesh, this enticing music is rich in rhythm and melody. Akhter takes you through a musical hourney ranging from gently meditative to spontaneously energetic and is KULCHA’s special guest as part of The Visible Project. Friday 18 November 8.00pm The VISIBLE Photo Project is using photography to empower street children in Dhaka, Bangladesh, providing them with a means of communicating their unique perspectives on life with the world. This international exhibition aims to raise awareness and garner support for the issue of child rights in the majority world. This exhibition will be opened with a launch at the KULCHA venue on Universal Childrens Day, featuring photographs taken by street children in Dhaka; Bangladeshi music and food, video footage of cross cultural workshops with Fremantle school children. Launch Sunday 20 November 2.00 – 4.00pm Croatian Cultural Week is staged each year to promote cultural diversity to Australian audiences with an example of Croatian cultural heritage blending this specific culture into a wider Australian Landscape. FTI Cinemas, 91 Adelaide Street Fremantle SOUL OF THE DESERT BY PHILIPPA NIKULINSKY Watercolours, drawings and field notes describing the amazing biodiversity of Australia’s arid lands – the abundance of rich vegetation, the interaction between lizards, birds, termites and plants, the ecosystem and the blooming of the desert after rain. Coinciding with the launch of Philippa’s new book published by Fremantle Arts Centre Press. SIGNING OFF ON THE STATE BY AMANDA ALLERDING This new mixed media series explores the official narrative that contributes to perceptions of an Australian national identity. Allerding investigates the sacredness of particular battle-sites such as the Murray River at Pinjarra, and the 1834 massacre of the Bindjareb Nyungar people, as well as Anzacs, military decorations and the topography of Gallipoli. BRIAN MCKAY - COLLECTIVE WORKS Brian McKay is one of Western Australia’s foremost contemporary artists, who has enjoyed a practice in Fremantle over the last thirty years. The exhibition will present painting, works on paper and distressed aluminium drawn from Murdoch University and City of Fremantle Art Collections, developed in collaboration with the artist and Galerie Dusseldorf, the artists’ representing the gallery. Art works will be exhibited at the City of Fremantle Art Collection Gallery, at the Fremantle Art Centre and City Library (runs 29 October until 4 December). 22 October – 20 November Free Artists talks – rsvp essential PAUL GIOIA TRIO Piano – every which way! Supported by double bass and a vocalist, Paul Gioia plays with an infectious passion and sensitivity that traverses numerous styles without losing sight of a song full of life and soul. Takes you through the 1905 work undertaken by the Fremantle Municipal Tramways and Electric Lighting Board, which culminated in the opening of the tramways on 30 October 1905 as part of the first Fremantle Week – now our Fremantle Festival. This wonderful collection of historic photographs illuminates this story from the breaking of ground, to installation, and finally celebration. 18 – 27 November normal opening hours St Paul’s and Fremantle Festival both mark their centenary year. In celebration of this and to create a sustainable presence for the future, Fremantle artists are invited to contribute to the “Illuminations” Art Exhibition where proceeds of sales will be donated to the St Paul’s Centenary Restoration Appeal. Refreshments on sale. 19, 20, 26 and 27 November THE GREAT LITTLE CHRISTMAS SHOW Gallery East’s artists and invited guest artists have created the perfect painting, prints, sculpture and jewellery in miniature for the ideal seasonal present. 17 November – 18 December This is a celebration using colour and light in different mediums: painting, glass, pottery, jewellery and lollies (edible art). Illuminati is a group exhibition of local and international artists. Judging takes place on Sunday 27 November, there will be a $100 prize for the best entry as well as $100 for popular choice. 18 – 27 November The Australian Centre for Concrete Art is responsible for a series of public art works in Fremantle including the design for repainting the Queensgate carpark. The Wot R U Project This is a play/game that sheds light on schoolyards, sports fields and other places that really educate use about ourselves. The project was designed to explore and perform the intersection of comedy, musical theatre, epic drama, animation and video game design techniques. THE YOUNG PLAYMAKERS COMEDY FESTIVAL To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Fremantle Festival, Wordplay is launching its YOUNG PLAYMAKERS kNOw nonSENSE FESTIVAL. The competition is based at 11-15 year olds and their teachers who enjoy wackiness, nonsense, the oddities of life, winning prizes, having fun, looking at the ridiculous and ludicrous, laughing at themselves and know the “great thing about being imperfect is the joy it brings to others”. Five schools have risen to the challenge of devising and performing an original act of up to 10 minutes .
